Long story to get this shot. I booked a volcano tour over Mauna Loa from a Cessna, but it was cancelled for weather. Now I have to leave not knowing when I'll see this again (last eruption 38 years ago). I didn't give up & decided to change my KOA-SEA (DL485) leg to KOA-SFO (UA1724, past flight track shows this routing takes us closer to the volcano) though I would get home 6h later than planned, I thought it was worth a try. Still thought it was a long shot, considering clouds, and all those lights on the wing. As we climbed out at a sluggish climb rate, a red glow appeared after takeoff, shortly after lava was visible climbing through 14000ft.
