The Short C.1 was the first British fixed wing VTOL aircraft, using 4 engines to take off and one for horizontal flight. This aircraft operated the types maiden flight in 1957 and over its 10 year service life it served to influence other VTOL designs such as the Harrier. For some reason they felt the best way to display it was with one wing cut off and hanging from a wall.
