The space shuttle Enterprise on display in a special enclosure onboard the rear flight deck of the USS Intrepid. The ceramic tiles clearly visbile used to withstand the re-entry heat. Enterpise never entered Space but was used for development and test purposes with five atomspheric glide flights paving the way for the reusable space shuttle programme. She was in service from 1976 until 1985
