Notes:

Low res image of a Yak-3 crash involving ZK-YYY Cn 1701231 (which should not have happened) at ‘Warbirds Over Wanaka (WOW) 2018’, at Wanaka Airport (NZWF), in overcast conditions on Saturday 31Mar2018. Greame Frew in Yak-3 ZK-VVS and Arthur Dovey in ZK-YYY took off from Paved Rwy 29 and opened the WOW 2018 Airshow with a flypast over fire-balls/ fireworks. Graeme landed uneventfully on the paved runway, while Arthur landed on Grass Rwy 29 at 1004 hrs. Parked on the grass Runway opposite the Gold Pass Grandstand were two large mobile ‘Cherry-Pickers’. The Pilot was unable to see forward over the nose of ZK-YYY, and the Stbd wing of the Yak-3 collided with one of the ‘Cherry-Pickers’. The aircraft ground-looped through 700 degrees clockwise, with a demolished Stbd wing. Arthur vacated the aircraft unassisted in less than a minute. Surprisingly, the ‘Cherry Pickers’ remained on the grass Runway for the entire Saturday Flying Program, with a line of tyres marking the mobile ‘obstructions’. Apologies for low quality of this ‘crash landing’ Accident image.
