Notes:

From the AWM facebook page; On 17 December 1917 an RE8 observational aircraft from No. 3 Squadron, AFC, flown by Lieutenant James Sandy and Sergeant Henry Hughes was carrying out a heavy artillery patrol on the Western Front when it was attacked by a formation of six enemy aircraft. Heavily outnumbered Sandy and Hughes were able to defend themselves for some minutes before shooting down one of its attackers. Albatros D.Va D.5390/17 was struck by a bullet in its petrol tank and was forced to land in Australian lines. Its German pilot Lieutenant Rudolf Clausz was captured and made a prisoner of war. Albatros D.Va D.5390/17 was returned to Australia as part of the collection of the newly founded Australian War Memorial and is currently on display part of the Over the Front exhibition. However, Sandy and Hughes did not return as scheduled and no trace of them or their aircraft could be found. It wasn’t until 24 hours later that the mystery of their disappearance was solved.
