With only 2 McDonnell Douglas MD-87 when it first began operations in 1989, Silkair expanded its fleet in 1997 with the first of 6 Boeing 737-300s. From 1998 to 2012, a total of 27 new Airbus A319s and A320s led to the complete retirement of their Boeing 737-300s in 1999. Then also in 2012, the airline signed an order with Boeing for up to 68 Boeing 737-800 Next Gen and MAX aiircraft, reigniting the partnership between the two companies. Five years later, a total of 17 Boeing 737-800NGs has already being delivered.
