Originally started in the '70s as a counter Pratt & Whitney's market-dominant JT8D, the CFM56 has proved quite successful, with thousands in service. The LEAP56 project will soon hang below new 737s, thanks to its ability to deliver similar economics to the GTF yet with a much smaller fan diameter capable of maintaining the 737s current non-existent ground clearance.
