On August 6, 1945 this very B-29A Superfortress nicknamed "Enola Gay" had dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later it flew along another B-29 nicknamed "Bockscar" when that plane dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. In that mission "Enola Gay" served as an advance weather reconnaissance aircraft. Now "Enola Gay" is on the display at the Udvar Hazy Museum.
