McDonnell Aircraft delivered F-4C number 64-0748 in 1965. On May 20, 1967, Major Bob Janca and his GIB (Guy In the Back) Lt. William Roberts, Jr. scored a MiG-21 kill while flying CAP from Danang. Major Janca was one of many pilots who flew it, but he was the only pilot who earned it a red star. Number seven-forty-eight is now at rest on a pedestal at the La Salle Street Gate at Langley AFB. The bad-boy airplane is painted and configured exactly as it was just a few minutes after Bob chocked in on that day in 1967 - lizard paint job... and a missing AIM-9B.
