A legendary craft! This aircraft is the first prototype of the Hawker P1127 - the XP831 - which proved the practicability of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), and led to the Harrier Jump Jet. Test pilot Bill Bedford made the first, tethered VTOL flight in the XP831 on 21 October 1960 at Hawker's flight test airfield at Dunsfold, Surrey.
