Notes:

The pilot waves on his return from a successful sortie ... I mean display. The aircraft represents one of the Spitfires which flew to the defence of Malta from USS Wasp. While at sea they were painted deck blue so as not to stand out against the aircraft carrier's camouflage and subsequently they flew in combat in this colour scheme. Note the "fully fueled" writing (in American spelling, of course) on the nose, which is how the Wasp's servicing crews kept track of each aircraft's readiness for launch. The only thing missing for complete authenticity is the tropical filter which was fitted under the nose of most Spitfire Vs operating in the Mediterranean theatre.
