I think you are right about the barrel distortion! I have now tried a 35mm lens out the window at the same altitude and I can see no curvature.

Could the curvature be actually an artefect of the lens distortion? The barrel distortion with short focal length can also make it appear so. I wondered so when I thought I observed the Earth's curvature. But anyways, nicee work!
