[Full HD/1920px] This is one of those pictures that have a very peculiar story… So, I was performing a very extensive 2-day planespotting trip through my own country with one of my best friends, from Porto to the Algarve, in the South of Portugal. Whilst en-route from Beja to Monchique on IC1 Road, passing Monte Ruivo, a small place already in Faro district, my friend looked to our left side and in the middle of a field, he saw a blue Kamov sitting there with some guys working on the engine… We couldn’t believe in what our eyes were witnessing. We didn’t slept on the night before because we left Porto very early and it was quite hot (air temperature of around 40 degrees Celsius / 140 degrees Fahrenheit) so we could be hallucinating... I decelerated and turned back where I was able to, then I stopped the car on the roadside and it was not indeed a mirage, we had a Kamov in front of us literally in the middle of nowhere… that chopper is based in Loulé Fire Department Heliport (LPLO) for the Firefighting Campaign of this season (Dispositivo Especial de Combate a Incêndios Rurais - DECIR 2020) and we were expecting to catch it on the next early morning, but to our surprise it was just stranded there. We grabbed our cameras stored on the car trunk and took some unique pictures of this weird event. It apparently seemed that the helicopter had to perform some kind of emergency landing there, which we confirmed 2 days later. A special truck was scrambled to carry a replacement engine for the Kamov and the mechanics were changing it in those isolated fields. And well, in the end we managed to caught it, but not in its original base… On the next morning we visited LPLO and we caught its brother ER-KGA, originally based in Vila Real (LPVR) in the North of Portugal, which presumably was a “back-up” aircraft. On the following week I returned to Algarve and ER-KGF was already in LPLO, so it seems everything ended alright. This is why I love my hobby, we can experience totally unexpected situations to share with our friends! ;-)
