This is the wreckage of one of 15 Catalina and Dornier flying boats (mostly Dutch and British) destroyed during an air raid on Broome, Western Australia, by nine Mitsubishi A6M.2 ‘Zero’ fighters of the 3rd Kokutai (Aircraft Group) of the Imperial Japanese Navy on 3 March 1942. The aircraft had been evacuating refugees from Java and many still had passengers aboard. Over 60 people were killed.
