- Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel Island) - LPPD, Portugal - Azores
João Paulo II Airport (IATA: PDL, ICAO: LPPD), serves the administrative capital and largest city of the Portuguese Autonomous Region of the Azores, Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. The airport is the fourth busiest in Portugal by passenger traffic and the busiest in the Azores. In May 1995, at the inauguration of the actual airport terminal, the facility received the designation João Paulo II, in honor of the visit of the Pope to the Azores in 1991. The runway 12/30 is 8192 ft (2497 m) long and the airport has three apron areas: North, South and Whiskey (visible on the photo). Located nearly halfway between Europe and North America, the airport serves not only as a hub for inter-island traffic in the archipelago, but also between the Portuguese mainland, the Macaronesia Archipelagos (the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde), Canada and the US. SATA maintains its hub at Ponta Delgada, with SATA Air Açores handling domestic inter-island traffic and its international subsidiary Azores Airlines (the former SATA International) handling domestic and international long-haul traffic. The airport is since April 2015 a base for Ryanair flights and is also served by Portuguese flag carrier TAP Portugal and a handful of European seasonal services. ANA Aeroportos de Portugal operates the facility.
