The MI-4 helicopter was inducted into IAF in early 60s. MI-4 was the mainstay of medium lift helicopter force till 1971. It played a major role in 1971 war. The heli lift of a battalion of Indian troops to the outskirts of Sylhet (now a district of Bangladesh) was the first heli-borne operations for the Indian Army. Clearance of Meghna river (Bangladesh) by 57 Mountain Division of Indian Army was another notable feat by the MI-4.
