Preserved at Volandia Museum. The Caproni Ca.18 was a monoplane reconnaissance employed in the early stages of the First World War. They were employed by the 15th Squadron, the first to use aircraft construction and project Italians. Designed by Giovanni Battista "Gianni" Caproni derived from the family of monoplanes ca.8-ca.16 developed between 1911 and 1912. The Ca.18 was destined for the 1st Italian military competition that was held at the beginning of 1913, but the aircraft did not get committed. Later, after the nationalization of the Caproni in the summer of 1913, he was ordained a batch of these aircraft, which went to equip the 15th Squadron, the first to use aircraft construction and project Italians. The development of Ca.18 continued with other models which were variants of the original project: Ca.19, ca.20, Ca.24, ca.25. Among these, the most significant variant is represented by ca.20 a prototype fighter aircraft. The Ca.18 was characterized by a structure made entirely of wood covered with canvas. The fuselage, equipped with a single open interior, the side windows adopted to facilitate the view of the pilot downwards, as the Ca.18 was destined for the role of aerial observation. Rear ended in a fletching classic comes equipped with a small fully mobile and semi-mounted cantilevered horizontal planes. The wing was mounted medium high, braced by a series of tie rods made of steel wire that connected to a tower located above the fuselage. Particular was the adoption of a bayonet fitting to allow for easy disassembly for easy remittance. The landing gear was fixed, with spoked wheels of great size, and integrated rear by a structure placed under the middle part of the tail boom and which served as a support to the tail skid. The engine was entrusted to a rotary engine Gnome Lambda manufacturing French able to develop a power of 80 HP (59 kW).
