RCAF PBYs were ordered under contract CAN-78, designated by Consolidated as the Model 28-5MC for ‘Canada’ and 28-5AMC for ‘amphibian’. Later, Boeing made the PBY at Vancouver with Consolidated-built hulls, and Canadian Vickers built them in Quebec. The RCAF named the flying boat as Canso. This aircraft is a Canso A, equivalent to the PBY-5A. One of two Catalina VCs posthumously went to Canso A pilot Flt Lt D. Hornell for sinking U-1225.
