I went out to Manchester airport on June 28th 1978, with the specific intention of photographing this aircraft, because it represented the end of an era-the last scheduled heavy pistonliner service into Manchester, which finally ended in 1981, when the aircraft was replaced on its Helsinki-Heathrow-Manchester-Helsinki run by a Finnair DC9. Then Air Atlantique surprised us all by bringing its DC6Bs to the airport on regular freight runs in the late 1980s, through to the mid-1990s, so this photograph didn't quite record the end of an era.
