Note that on the F.3 Interceptor version, differently from the IDS Strike Bomber version, there is only one pylon under each wing, primarily for an external fuel tank for extended range, and 2 shoulder attachments (on same pylon) for the Sidewinder AIM 9L /or ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air to Air Missile). It also carries 4 AMRAAMS (Medium Range Air to Air Missiles) underneath the fuselage, 2 in a row on each side. The AMRAAMS took over from the SkyFlash missiles which themselves were a derivative of the AIM-7 Sparrow semi active (radar homing) missiles. Contrary to common belief the few extra feet in the F3 intercepter version is primarily for the fuselage to accomodate 2 medium range missles in a row on each side and not for aerodynamic purposes.
