Notes:

JPD157 is climbing away from runway 19R in the golden hues of the early morning, heading for Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands are a small group of islands situated west of Morocco and Western Sahara in the Atlantic Ocean. Politically, they are part of Spain, but geographically, they belong to Africa. This is one of the longest flights within Europe, with an average flight time of about six hours. A fact many might not know is that the worst air disaster in history occurred on the neighboring island of Tenerife on March 27, 1977, at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport). The disaster involved two Boeing 747s, operated by KLM and Pan American World Airways (Pan Am), which collided on the runway, resulting in the deaths of 583 people. The impact and the resulting fire killed all 248 people on board the KLM plane and 335 of the 396 people on board the Pan Am plane, with only 61 survivors. The cause of the crash was a combination of factors, including miscommunications and misunderstandings between the air traffic control tower and the aircraft crews, compounded by dense fog that severely limited visibility. A critical mistake occurred when the KLM Boeing 747 attempted to take off without receiving takeoff clearance, while the Pan Am Boeing 747 was still taxiing on the same runway. This tragic event led to major improvements in cockpit communication, particularly the implementation of standardized procedures and “standard phraseology” to prevent similar accidents in the future.
