[Full HD/1920px] First ever visit of a Dassault Rafale in Porto. This quite unexpected movement was en-route from Istres Le Tubé Air Base (QIE/LFMI) to Norfolk Naval Station (NGU/KNGU) as FAF4020, along with FAF4021 (Rafale B 309 / 4-HB), FAF4010 (Airbus A330-243MRTT 046 / F-UJCL) and FAF4011 (Airbus A330-243MRTT 048 / F-UJCN), when it had to divert and perform an emergency landing on runway 17 due to a fire on engine #1. The second Rafale landed 25 minutes later, F-UJCN landed on runway 35 roughly one hour later to provide technical support, while F-UJCL returned to LFMI. A third Rafale B (333 / 4-IH) joined the group, landing in the same evening as FAF4220. Couldn't believe my eyes when I finally saw in person a landing of a fighter jet in my home airport! This frame even sports a brand-new special tail scheme with the French and American flags, which was applied to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the return to the United States of the French Marquis de Lafayette (the last surviving major general of the American Revolutionary War), and was supposed to overfly the cities of Yorktown, Washington and Williamsburg together with the U.S. Air Force. Unfortunately, due to this technical issue, it wasn’t possible to take this aircraft to the U.S.A., returning to France 3 days after the emergency landing and after receiving some maintenance to become airworthy again.
