On April 19, 1943, this ground-attack aircraft was shot down by the foe and fell into the sea. Pilot Viktor Kuznetsov and the rear gunner Alexander Reshetinsky were killed. Lately was discovered in 1974 at the bottom of Tsemesskaya Bay at a depth of 17 meters. It was decided to restore the aircraft and memorialize all the pilots who fought in the Second World War. On March 28, 1980, the monument to the Il-2 was installed on a concrete pedestal and opened for viewing.
