Preserved at Italian Air Force museum of Vigna di Valle. The prototype of the Ariete flew for the first time in October 1940 and immediately showed excellent characteristics and performance, in some cases even higher than those of its predecessor, the Re.2001, from which it derived various technical and construction solutions. Total production reached 225 units, of which 149 went to the Regia Aeronautica, the rest to the Luftwaffe. It was used in the last months of the war as a fighter-bomber and attacker, especially to counter the Allied landing in Sicily. After the armistice of 8 September about forty surviving aircraft continued their operations in the South, in the Cobelligerant Aviation, until 1944, while it was practically not used in the units of the R.S.I .. The Germans, on the other hand, continued to use them in France. The specimen exhibited at the A.M. museum was one of those that belonged to the Luftwaffe and was found in the seventies in Palermo. After an initial phase of restoration, which made it presentable but still in need of further interventions, it was exhibited for the first time to the public on 12 October 2017 in the presence of the Minister of Defense, Sen. Roberta Pinotti, of the Chief of State Major of the Defense, Gen. Claudio Graziano, and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Gen. S.A. Enzo Vecciarelli; it bears the livery of an aircraft of the 239th Squadron of the 102nd Group, 5th Wing of the Italian Cobelligerant Air Force.
